Talch: Lectures online - Better or Worse?

(The Death of Socrate by Jacques-Louis David)

Being the laid back, non-punctual often truant university student that I am, I find online lectures a blessing. However, some people (non-truant, punctual, pedantic students/evil lecturers) are not inclined to agree with my viewpoint. These people argue that online lectures create a false sense of security. Apparently, students are lulled into the belief that online lectures are a replacement of ‘live’ lectures (GASP!). Now my (accurate) belief is that a healthy mix of ‘live’ and online lectures allows one to physically participate in the learning experience and sleep in (or leave early, go to unibar etc..)! I would say that I participated in an even amount of ‘live’ and online lectures so I suppose one could say that my deductions are a result of empirical research meaning, this is TOTALLY LEGIT!

Overall, the point I am making is that, in light of the primary observations I have made, online lectures are better rather than worse. Kudos to whoever introduced them to university life!

P.S. Lets not forget all the other practical benefits of online lectures i.e. they serve as a useful resource when doing assignments, you can go back and listen to certain parts of a lecture, the PAUSE button etc. etc. etc.

  1. As much as the online lectures gives you the ability to go back and listen over and over, I don't find them to be a effective method of studying (imo).

Although this depends on where you're listening from. Often people are distracted on the computer at home, but if you're listening on your iPod or in the uni comp labs, you're less inclined to be distracted. For me, I'd rather have 'live' lectures since it gives the person the presence of actually being in a learning environment. Unless you're with friends who draw and talk throughout the whole thing... :)
